When you buy your first home, it can be an exciting milestone in life. It can also be a bit of a project! Some homes will be ready-made and perfect for you to move straight into. However, there are some that need you to put your own stamp on them before they’ll be finished! This is certainly the case when you take on a renovation project. If you’ve just bought your first home and you’re looking to renovate it, here are a few things to consider before you begin.

    The Budget

First of all, you need to make sure that you set a budget. When it comes to the idea of you being able to get the renovation underway and complete it to the standard you want, it’s important to know how much money you’re working with. This can work in two ways. Firstly, you may have a set amount of money available, so it will be important that you stick to that. Or, if you can estimate the cost of what you need to do, and then look to source the budget or save up after.

    The Plan

The next phase is to come up with a plan. When it comes to renovating a house, it can often feel like a minefield. This is why knowing the best place to start will always come in handy. Whether you’re working on this project yourself or you’re looking to hire contractors to help you, you need to create a plan of the work that needs doing, along with a schedule and order of what needs doing and when!

    The Details

However, a renovation is more than just planning out the work and then getting it underway. A huge part of the process is buying what you need for it! This is where the final details come in. This could be in the form of beautiful paintable brass plates for switches & outlets for all of your electrical elements, or picking out the right kitchen cupboards and countertops. Making decisions can be such a huge part of the process that it’s important to get started early.

    The Decor

Then we have the decor. And yes, this does also involve more decisions! Because, at some point, you’ll need to get paint colors chosen and on the walls, along with any wallpaper, wooden trims, mouldings, and even things like your wooden flooring or carpet choices. Knowing what decorative style you want to go with early on can make this process easier.

    The Timescale

Lastly, you also need to make sure that you’re aware of how long this is all likely to take. While it can be impossible to project anything that will be 100% accurate, you can get a rough idea. This will give you something to work toward. There are often delays, and you may even find that you run out of money from time to time along the way, so being flexible here can really make a difference. That way, you’ll find that you are able to get to work as quickly as you can, but still be adaptable should any issues crop up!
